Rule Number One To Starting Your Own Business; Keep your plan realistic. Take whatever your expectations are for success the first few years and cut them in half. Just for fun, cut that number in half again. There is a reason so many businesses fail in the first few years. The numbers are atrocious. If I was a better educator and writer, I would look the actual stats up, but I am not that guy. Trust me they are bad, and besides, you can do anything with statistics. 9 out of 10 people will tell you that. And furthermore, the “official” numbers do not even count the “hobbies” and “side jobs” that people start that never get to the point of being counted as an actual, viable, entity. Why is this? Operating a business is hard. Things do not just happen on their own. When you were in the corporate world you could sit back and wait for the work to come to you. Guess what? That is not going to happen now. YOU have to go out and make the business happen.
